About Quadrant Charts

When to Use Quadrant Charts

Quadrant charts are perfect for strategic planning, decision-making matrices, risk assessment, portfolio analysis, and prioritization frameworks. They help visualize data points across two dimensions, making it easy to categorize and analyze items based on dual criteria.

Benefits of Quadrant Charts

  • Perfect for strategic planning and decision-making frameworks like Eisenhower Matrix
  • Interactive drag-and-drop functionality allows real-time positioning adjustments
  • Customizable axis positions and labels adapt to any dual-criteria analysis
  • Clear quadrant labels help categorize items into actionable groups
  • Zoom and pan capabilities support detailed analysis of complex datasets

How to Create a Quadrant Chart

1. Add Your Data Points

Start by adding data points in the configuration panel. Each point needs a label and X,Y coordinates (0-100 scale). Use the color picker to assign meaningful colors to different categories or priorities.

2. Configure Axis and Quadrant Labels

Set meaningful labels for your X and Y axes (e.g., 'Effort' and 'Impact'). Then define labels for each quadrant to create clear categories like 'Quick Wins', 'Major Projects', 'Fill Ins', and 'Thankless Tasks'.

3. Position Your Axes

Adjust the axis position sliders to move the dividing lines. This is especially useful when your scale isn't centered at 50/50 - you might want axes at 30/70 for different analysis frameworks.

4. Customize Visual Settings

Enable grid lines for better precision, adjust point sizes for visibility, customize colors for axes and background, and configure font sizes for optimal readability.

5. Interact with Your Chart

Enable drag-and-drop to move points interactively, use zoom and pan for detailed analysis, and hover over points to see tooltips with precise coordinates and labels.

Tips for Better Charts:

  • Use consistent scales (0-100) for both axes to maintain proper proportions
  • Choose quadrant labels that clearly indicate the action or category for each area
  • Enable drag functionality for collaborative sessions where points need repositioning
  • Use distinct colors for different categories or teams to improve visual clarity
  • Position axes based on your specific thresholds rather than defaulting to center

Frequently Asked Questions

Use the Axis Position sliders in General Settings. You can move both X and Y axes independently from 20% to 80% to create asymmetric quadrants that better reflect your analysis framework.

Yes! Enable 'Drag & Drop' in Display Settings, then click and drag any point to reposition it. This is perfect for collaborative planning sessions where priorities might shift during discussion.

Set your X-axis to represent one criteria (like Effort or Cost) and Y-axis for another (like Impact or Value). This creates four distinct categories for decision-making, such as the popular Eisenhower Matrix format.

In the Labels section, you can customize both axis labels and the four quadrant labels. For example, use 'High Impact, Low Effort' for the top-left quadrant to create clear action categories.

Yes, enable 'Zoom & Pan' in Display Settings to use mouse wheel zooming and click-drag panning. This is especially useful for charts with many closely positioned points.
